Jivamukti focus

Each month, Jivamukti founders Sharon Gannon and David Life offer a focus of the month for their teachers and classes throughout the world. July's focus, Planting a Sound Garden speaks of our actions as vibrations or sounds and the way in which "the content of our own minds has a direct effect on the harmony or disharmony we find in the world around us".
Given the chaos of the world today, seemingly insurmountable and overwhelming, we can easily fall into a feeling of futility, with that can come a sense of detachment from responsibility. We must not surrender our power in a time of crisis. Our thoughts and actions do bear fruit. We are reminded of the significance of our individual yoga practice. Of the practices of many. Of consistent and commited practice right here in Burlington, and around the world.
Sofi leads Jivamukti Yoga Classes four times a week at the studio. Summer Schedule:Sundays at 5pm, Wednesday and Fridays at Noon and Thursdays at 5:40pm. Today at the studio, Kripalu (Emily) at noon, Jivamukti (Sofi), Ashtanga (Kathy), Kripalu (John) at 5:40pm this evening and Vinyasa (Sheehan) at 7:30pm.
Your practice generates change in the world. Believe that.

berry time

The most lucious berries are on the way to the studio and you can pick em yourself! Stop by Adams Berry Farm on Intervale Road before or after a class. They grow strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and are Chittenden County's only full scale certified organic berry farm. Open Tuesday through Sunday 10-7. Also of note, and right across the river from the studio, Winooski's Farmer's Market is in front of the Champlain Mill, Thursdays from 3:30-6:30pm. If you are looking for more local, farm to table organic - NOFA's website has a lot of great info including a handy list of all the local farmers' markets. Not local? Check out Local Harvest for local organic near you.

Diva?

A new talk show debuting this fall has invited supporters of the Humane Society of the United States to record and submit videos of pets. Show producers will choose videos to be featured as part of a regular spotlight on pets. Closer to home, The Franklin County Humane Society has a new website. Esmeredla's (photo) humble beginnings... and while she might have better things to do that evening that don't include dogs, you might be interested in the Chittenden Humane Society's Canine's & Cocktails benefit on Thursday, July 20.

Bhagavad Gita July 15

Saturday, July 15 from 6:30-8:30pm, the Four Classics Series continues with a discussion on the Bhagavad Gita. Please come having read the text. Several translations are available at the studio and a number of translations can be downloaded from the web.

When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day. - Mahatma Gandhi

There is still room in David's Ashtanga Second Series Weekend Workshop that begins tomorrow night. Friday night will start the weekend with a Mysore style Primary Series practice. If you have an active Ashtanga practice - we highly recommend you attend. The Mysore practice on Friday evening from 6-8pm alone is something very unique and assists from David will no doubt bring you to new understandings within your practice. pradipika

This evening at YVT- Nico Jenkins leads a discussion on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika as part of our special series Four Classic Texts of Yoga Philosophy. Join us at 6:30, please bring your copy of the text. Here's a preview: Chapter 1.12 - 13 The student of hatha yoga should practice in a solitary place, in a temple or a hermitage, an arrow shot away from rocks, water, and fire. The land should be fertile and well governed. (13) The hermitage should have a small door and no windows. It should be level with the ground and have no holes in the wall. [It should be] neither too high nor too long, and clean and free from insects. It should be laid daily with cow dung. Outside there should be a raised platform with an elevated seat and a water tank. The whole should be surrounded by a wall. See you tonight!
