World Aids Day is Dec 1

View The World Aids Campaign video Stop AIDS; What will you do?. This 8 minute video covers the status of AIDS in 2006, the promises that have been made and the ga s in action, specifically highlighting the goal of Universal Access. December 1st is World AIDS Day. Established by the World Health Organization in 1988, World AIDS Day serves to focus global attention on the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Observance of this day provides an opportunity for governments, national AIDS programs, churches, community organizations and individuals to demonstrate the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Vermont CARES is our local committee for AIDS resources, education and services. Please join us at our downtown studio for the 12:30-1:30 Lunch Break Class with Kathy McNames. This will be a special I'll Yoga for You class and all proceeds will be donated to Vermont CARES. Representatives from the agency will be onhand taking part in the class and will be happy to chat about opportunities for volunteer involvement. They also would like to extend an invitation to join current and former leaders and supporters of Vermont CARES' community as they commemorate the agency's 20th year of service on World AIDS Day for reception and reflection from 5 to 7pm at the Firehouse Gallery on Church Street.

Pattabhi Jois in Florida

The Ashtanga Yoga Institute is opening a studio in Islamorada, Florida. Guruji will be there for the grand opening party on March 24, followed by a two week workshop. (Word is it will be his only US stop.) Registration is now open at $200/week. No word on the number of spaces available or the size of the center as yet... but sure to be quite the yoga party for those of you that can be down there at the end of March.

And now a few words from the Isalmorada website...
"The average temperature in the Florida Keys for January is 74 degrees. Temperatures in the daytime & nighttime differ only about 10 degrees. In fact, being surrounded on water, the Florida Keys have a very temperate climate. Much more so that the Florida mainland. There is no known record of frost, ice, sleet, or snow. Fog is rare."
And further down the page...oddly enough,
""Your worst enemy can not harm you as much as your own thoughts, unguarded." from the Dhammapada"

.... hmmm... guess there's no point in thinking about their perfect weather for those of us living in the dark dark days of late november filled with cold rain and temperatures in the 30s....

opening postponed...

We apologize for the late notice, but we have just made a difficult decision to postpone our opening for a week - and open the downtown studio for classes on Monday, November 20. Kathy's yoga teacher, Thom Birch died unexpectedly of a heart attack and she has gone down to East Hampton to be with Beryl. On an unrelated note, Scott seriously injured his back and is laid up for the week. These two factors made us think it best to focus on covering their classes at the mill and keeping things their running smoothly - and opening downtown when the two of them can be present. We are so looking forward to sharing the downtown space with everyone - it is beautiful and has a very special feel - and look forward to seeing you in the new space the week of November 20 and invite you all to stop by for our grand opening on Friday, November 24. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

downtown renting vs owning

We vote for own. Bring your own mat to the downtown studio. Mats will be available for purchase. There will be a very limited number of rental mats available for an additional fee of $1/use.

Dear Friends,
My greatest teacher, my sweet soulmate and husband, Thom Birch died suddenly and instantly of a massive heartattack in the very early morning of Thursday, November 9. Please take a moment to join me in celebrating his life with all our family and friends. For those of you who were friends and knew Thom, please would you join us over the weekend in playing Thom's CD, playing the music of his mentor and teacher, Carlos Santana, retelling his wonderful stories, and remembering your personal experiences. We wish him joyful travels in his journey to his next lifetime, and we know he will be playing his guitar, singing Amazing Grace, and telling more stories all the way. Prasana Concert at UVM

Friends of Indian Music and Dance opens their 2006-2007 concert series on November 4, 2006 at 7:00pm by Carnatic/Fusion Electric Guitarist, Prasanna with Lakshman Mahadevan on the mridangam at the Recital Hall at UVM’s Redstone Campus. In a world studded with brilliant guitarists, “Prasanna plays like nobody on the planet,” according to one jazz critic. As a guitarist and composer, Prasanna's prolific body or work is as diverse as it is integrated. This includes over eleven Carnatic albums, the just released Carnatic/Rock Jimi Hendrix tribute album “Electric Ganesha Land,” a highly acclaimed Jazz Fusion album “Be the Change” featuring several Grammy Award winning artists from the jazz world, an eclectic solo guitar album “Peaceful,” and many more. As a true artist, Prasanna is both a traditionalist and modernist and everything in between.
